Brushing removes food particles, plaque, and bacteria from most tooth surfaces, but it can’t reach between the teeth—areas highly prone to decay and gum disease.

Daily flossing is the most effective way to clean between teeth and under the gumline. It not only removes debris but also disrupts plaque buildup, protecting your gums, teeth, and bone from damage.

Plaque is a sticky, nearly invisible film made up of bacteria, food particles, and saliva. The bacteria release toxins that cause cavities and irritate the gums. If plaque isn’t removed, it hardens into tartar, which leads to further gum irritation and eventually bone loss, marking the onset of periodontal disease.

Proper flossing technique:

  1. Take 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) of dental floss and wrap it around your middle fingers, leaving about 2 inches (5 cm) between them.
  2. Use your thumbs and forefingers to guide the floss gently between your teeth with a sawing motion.
  3. Curve the floss into a ‘C’ shape around each tooth and under the gumline. Gently move the floss up and down, cleaning the sides of each tooth.
  4. If conventional floss is difficult to use, floss holders are a helpful alternative.

By flossing daily, you can maintain a healthy and beautiful smile for life!

With the advancements in modern dental treatments and preventive care, there are now fewer reasons to extract teeth. When an issue arises, our goal is always to restore the tooth to its original function. Tooth extraction is considered the last resort, as it can lead to significant dental and cosmetic issues if the tooth isn’t replaced.

Losing a tooth can be a distressing experience, often resulting from injury, accidents, fractures, severe decay, or gum disease. When teeth are lost, it’s essential to replace them to avoid future dental and cosmetic complications.

When a tooth is missing, the supporting jawbone starts to shrink, causing neighboring teeth to shift or tip into the gap. Additionally, the opposing tooth may begin to move toward the space due to the lack of contact. These shifts can lead to issues like decay, gum disease, uneven wear on teeth, and TMJ (jaw joint) problems. While these complications may not appear immediately, they will gradually affect your ability to chew, the alignment of your bite, and the appearance of your smile.

To address missing teeth, several replacement options are available:

Removable Bridges – These are a practical solution for replacing one or more missing teeth, particularly in complex cases where other methods aren’t suitable. Made with tooth-colored artificial teeth and metal clasps that attach to natural teeth, removable bridges are the most cost-effective option but may be less aesthetically pleasing due to visible metal clasps.

Fixed Bridges – Made from porcelain or composite materials, these bridges are permanently anchored to natural teeth adjacent to the gap. While this option is sturdy and non-removable, it requires crowning two healthy teeth to hold the bridge in place.

Dentures – Used when most or all teeth in a dental arch are missing, dentures are removable and designed to closely resemble your natural teeth.

Implants – One of the best solutions for replacing one or more missing teeth, implants also provide support for poorly fitting dentures. A dental implant involves placing an artificial root into the jawbone, with an artificial tooth attached to it, providing a stable, durable, and natural-looking replacement.

If you have missing teeth, talk to us about whether they need to be replaced and explore the options available to you. Together, we’ll determine the best solution for your unique situation. Early intervention is always simpler and more cost-effective than waiting for a larger issue to develop.

We’re all at risk of losing a tooth unexpectedly—over 5 million teeth are knocked out each year! Knowing how to respond in this emergency can increase the chances of saving the tooth. If acted on quickly and calmly, knocked-out teeth can sometimes be reimplanted by following these simple steps:

  1. Handle the tooth carefully – Only touch the crown (the chewing part), not the roots.
  2. Do not scrub or clean with chemicals – If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently using saliva or whole milk. If neither is available, use water sparingly.
  3. See a dentist within 30 minutes – The sooner you get professional help, the better the chance for successful reimplantation.

Transporting the tooth:

  • Try to place the tooth back in its socket immediately. Bite down gently on gauze, a wet tea bag, or your own teeth to hold it in place. Apply a cold compress for pain or swelling as needed.
  • If the tooth cannot be reinserted, store it in a container covered with saliva or whole milk. You can also keep the tooth moist by holding it under your tongue or between your lip and gums. Never transport the tooth in a tissue or dry cloth.
  • Consider keeping a “Save-A-Tooth” storage kit in your home first aid kit. Available at many pharmacies, it contains a case and solution designed for tooth transport.

The quicker the tooth is placed back into its socket, the higher the chances it can survive for years to come. Remember these steps to be prepared for such an emergency.

Preventing knocked-out teeth:

  • Wear a mouthguard during sports.
  • Always use your seatbelt.
  • Avoid physical altercations.
  • Steer clear of chewing hard objects like ice, popcorn kernels, or hard bread.
